Summertime Decluttering Tips

Summertime is restful time. Time when we prioritize down time, family time and self care time. If we are lucky, we make it to the beach or pool and soak up some of that Vitamin D.
Summer time is also one of my favorite times to declutter and think about simplifying my life from "things" before the fall. Here are areas to declutter while the sun is out and summer mode is in full swing.
Areas to Declutter:
1. First and foremost, let's get rid of all the winter clothes we just never wear. How many sweaters do you own that don’t fit or are just not your style? Boots? Pants? Scarves? How much do you really wear thats in your winter wardrobe? Probably a hole lot less than you own.
2. Now that the kids are home, let's go through their toys and downsize what they have outgrown, or no longer like to play with. Studies show that when kids have too many toys available, they too, are overwhelmed.
3. Garage and Shed items that you just no longer utilize. Do you outsource your lawn care? Hire a handyman for home repairs? Have old tools that you no longer use? In summertime places like facebook marketplace are a great resource to offloading your no longer needed items.
4. Electronics that need to be disposed of? It’s a great time to head to your local dump to properly dispose of those items while the sun is out and shining and your fingers aren’t frozen.
5. Food Items. Imagine this: You wake up one morning, turn on your favorite playlist, make the most delicious cup of coffee and open the windows for a fresh breeze. You then purge all food items that are expired in your pantry and freezer/fridge...all before the true heat sets in. Call me crazy (and you're probably correct), but that sounds blissful.
6. Summer Seasonal items. Now that you are likely out and about to the pool, beach and cookouts, its a great time to take inventory and get rid of the things you don't need.

Okay that’s nice, but how?

It’s simple, just start. Pick a manageable space (a closet or section of garage), put on some music and start. If you get stuck on an item, put it in a maybe pile to come back to. Check out my other post on how we get stuck decluttering to help you get through the sticky moments and onto a greater sense of calm. Take items to your local shelter or thrift store or schedule a donation pick up in your area.
